In today's economy, the disparity in business ownership among Black individuals is grim. Despite the rich tapestry of creativity, innovation, and talent within our communities and across the diaspora, systemic barriers and limited access to resources have resulted in a significant under-representation of Black-owned companies across various sectors. This lack of ownership not only stifles economic growth but also perpetuates cycles of inequality and limits the diversity of perspectives in the marketplace.

Our perspectives.

In a world where economic empowerment is crucial for community growth and sustainability, the need to build Black-owned businesses has never been more urgent. The Afro Collective is dedicated to addressing the stark economic gaps that persist in our society, and we believe that fostering Black entrepreneurship is a vital step toward achieving equity and empowerment.

Did you Know?

  1. Despite the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions, there are currently no Black-owned companies producing batteries?
  2. The net worth of a typical white family is eight times that of a Black family and five times that of a Hispanic family.
  3. Black people control less than 1% of the industries where we collectively spend trillions (ranging from batteries to airlines to even  prescription drugs.)
  4. 92% of black business owners struggled with financial issues during the pandemic.
  5. minority-owned businesses face more barriers to getting financing and are more likely to get shut out of financing.
  6. Black and Hispanic female founders get less then 50% (0.43%) of total venture capital.
  7. Only 4% percent of Black Americans’ businesses survive the startup stage, even though 20% of Black Americans start businesses 44

These Numbers need to change. That's why we exist.

How Did We Get Here?

The history of Black economic displacement is long and complex, rooted in systemic barriers that have hindered ownership and entrepreneurship. From discriminatory lending practices to limited access to education and resources, these obstacles have created a landscape where Black individuals struggle to build and sustain businesses. The legacy of these challenges continues to impact our communities today, making it imperative that we take action now.

This is where we come into play.

Why Are We Here?

Who is the Afro Collective?

At The Afro Collective, we believe that every great idea deserves the opportunity to flourish. Our main mission is to bridge the gap between the ideation and execution phases by providing comprehensive support to Black entrepreneurs and the wider community. We offer a diverse array of resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities designed to guide you through every stage of your entrepreneurial journey.

If running a business isn't your focus but community organization is, there is a place for you here as well! Our initiatives include community programs that foster creativity and collaboration, such as sharing innovative projects and resources, scholarships, and funding opportunities.

We provide access to a digital library for education and bookkeeping, along with a dedicated study hall and education area where educators can teach classes and host events like hackathons, financial literacy courses and more. The collective is also home to various community programs, many that focus on supporting individuals with disabilities, addressing the needs of the parents of our community with access to information around black daycare and doulas, and promoting community gardens and farms.

In addition to grants and funding, we offer access to directories of  healthcare resources, mutual aid, and business assistance to ensure that every entrepreneur has the tools they need to succeed across all regions. We also provide defense and security assistance, including directories to security and defense organizations, directories to firearm training and de-escalation services, and other events to foster a safe and supportive environment.

Join us in our mission to create a community where we cultivate a future where Black ownership is the norm, not the exception. Explore our resources, connect with mentors, and take the first step towards bringing your vision to life with The Afro Collective.

This is not a moment, it's a movement.
